Fish And Its Benefits As Food

Fish are excellent sources of proteins, essential Omega 3's fatty acids, and also rich in Vitamin B and D. They are lower in calories, saturated fat, and total fat than a comparable portion of meat or poultry.

Omega 3's found in fish are healthy fats that are important for optimal immune functions and also to increase metabolism and for hormones production.

Some PMS or menopausal symptoms might benefit from extra omega 3's. They are also involved with anything that relates to cognitive function, so sometimes depression, memory, concentration, or learning disabilities can be helped. They are very important for cardiovascular health, any condition that involves inflammation like arthritis, and are helpful in controlling blood sugar levels for people with diabetes.

Salt water fish is rich in iodine, phosphorous and calcium. Those who eat regularly salt water fish will not have these mineral deficiencies. Saltwater fish is also high in Omega 3 fatty acids, which are heart friendly.

Studies have proved pregnant women eating more fish during pregnancy and breastfeeding have higher chances to have intelligent children. The Omega-3 fatty acids in fish help to promote healthy vision and brain developments in infants.

Though seafood can be a valuable source of iron, protein and omega-3 fatty acids, pregnant women should limit their intake to  once or twice a week during pregnancy because many types of fish contain potentially high levels of mercury.

Some fish that completely needs to be avoided are shark, swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, tuna steak, Spanish mackerel, large and small mouth bass, lake whitefish, and salmon from the great lakes,  As these fish are at the top of the food chain they are the ones that carry the highest level of mercury.

Fish with light meat, like sardines, canned light tuna, shrimp, canned salmon, herrings contain relatively more fatty acids and less mercury. Other types of fish with white meat, like cod and haddock also contain lower levels of both mercury and fatty acids.

Fish oils are available in capsule and liquid form. The cod liver oils are derived from cod and also from pollock, satire, and whiting. Fish oils are from fish liver and fish body. The oil extracted from the fish livers is deodorised and then vitamin E and antioxidants are added to prevent it from going rancid.
